Just another Indian, Blog:1

Let's start off in the beginning. With page one. One of the themes in this book is respect. If there was respect in this novel, I am almost certain that there wouldn’t even be a need for this novel. Because the murders in this story wouldn’t have happened. The passage on the first page quotes “He wore cowboy boots to boost his stature, and he was rarely seen without his buckskin knife with its gold handle and oriental decorations. He craved respect, but on the street he was known as a man who could neither hold his liquor nor back up his bravado with his fists”. This quote shows how the character Bill Corrigan wanted respect but did nothing to earn it. He feels just because he is large and feared he should be respected. Bill isn’t the killer in the book. But the way he acted showed that he also had no respect for woman, in my opinion this makes Bill Corrigan just as guilty as John. Respect is a huge theme in this book because it ties closely to racism, and racism is the main theme. All the woman in this book so far were killed because they were native and noone seemed to mind. If there was respect for women of different races this story would be different.

  1. I agree with your aspect of Bill not being the killer but still responsible for the deaths of the woman in the book. Bill was himself a strong man. He could have done something in order to protect the woman that John murdered or t least send an anonymous tip into the Saskatoon police. It is often aid that inaction is as guilty as the action is self. The fact that Bill stood by and watched his friend kill innocent woman shows a coward in its tracks. The only reason Bill had told police in the novel was the incentive of money and for his way of getting to tell the stories of the murdered woman in order not it incriminate himself to police.

    1. I have to agree that Bill was a complete coward and that he should have done a lot more to stop Crawford. Although i am no sure if Bill was completely innocent in the death of the 16 year old as he said. although he didn't want to reveal that he was involved with the death of the girl he did admit that he was there but didn't ask for any protection from the police in court if he would be put on trial for accomplice in the murder. Although he should have been at lest fined or not get paid for as much as he did in the end. If the just paid him a thousand plus getting rid of the warrant for his arrest. All about him is that he did the right thing in the end even though he ended up getting paid for it. In the end he had probably save many more women from getting rape and/or killed by Crawford.
